2008 West Africa Rotary Project Fair And National Immunization Day Against Polio

2008 West Africa Rotary Project November 4 - November 13, 2008
Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire

The purpose of this trip is to eradicate polio, build strong friendships with the West African Rotarians and to attend a project fair to identify possible Rotary Foundation projects that can further Rotary’s goal of world understanding and peace.

Rotary International’s polio initiative is clearly in its final stages.  The World Health Organization projects that the Type 1 polio virus will be interrupted in 2008 and the Type 3 virus will be interrupted in 2009.  Further, the current polio immunization strategy is to provide much more tactical immunization responses to polio outbreaks, making it almost impossible to predict when and where further immunization efforts will be held.  This trip may be one of the last times you can participate in a polio eradication program before the disease is gone.

One of the legacies of the polio eradication effort in Africa is the tremendous outpouring of support from across the world.  Literally thousands of Rotarians have traveled to Africa to eradicate the disease, and in the mean time, these Rotarians have been exposed to the great needs of the African nations.  In response to these needs, the African Rotarians have created the West African Project Fair, an annual event where the local Rotarians can offer visiting Rotarians the opportunity to join them in matching grant programs to continue to make a difference in Africa.

The WAPF/Polio Eradication trip will depart November 4th and return November 13th.  Linked below is a PDF file that gives a detailed description of the trip, the price, the terms and conditions and an application.

To join the trip, we need a completed and signed application, AND a check of $400 per person.  Deposits MUST be by check, and not credit cards, although the final and most substantial payment can be made by Visa or Master Card.

Based upon the capacity and limitations of the Cote d’Ivoire Rotarians this trip must be limited to the first 80 people who sign up.  Each year this trip sells out with just weeks of it being announced.
